Peer Review Process

Editorial Procedures and Peer-Review Process

Initial Checks

All manuscripts received by the Editorial Team of Al-Kasyaf: Jurnal Studi Al-Qur’an dan Hadis are screened by a Managing Editor to verify completeness, adherence to the journal’s ethical policy, and conformity with the Author Guidelines. Submissions that violate ethics or fall outside the minimum standards may be rejected before peer review. Submissions that are improperly prepared will be returned to authors for revision and resubmission.

After screening, the Managing Editor consults the Editor-in-Chief (or assigned Editor) to confirm the manuscript’s fit to the journal’s scope and baseline scholarly soundness. One of the Editors will then be invited to handle the manuscript in the next stage. No judgment about potential impact is made at this stage. Any desk-reject decision is verified by the Editor-in-Chief.

Submission acknowledgement is sent within 12–24 hours of receipt.

Peer-Review

Manuscripts passing the initial checks are assigned to at least two independent reviewers. Al-Kasyaf applies a double-blind review: author identities are concealed from reviewers and vice versa.

Reviewers are selected by the handling editor (with input from the Editor-in-Chief where necessary) based on expertise; Editorial Board members may be invited. Reviewers must declare the absence of conflicts of interest.

Conflicts of Interest

The following situations constitute conflicts and should be avoided:

  • Reviewer has co-authored with any author within the past three (3) years.
  • Reviewer currently works at, or closely collaborates with, any author’s institution.
  • Reviewer supervises/has supervised or is/was supervised by any author (e.g., doctoral supervision).
  • Reviewer may receive personal or professional benefit from the outcome of the review.
  • Reviewer has a close personal relationship (e.g., family, close friend) with any author.
  • Reviewer has a direct or indirect financial interest related to the manuscript.

Previous collaboration in a broad multi-party project or co-organizing an event is not considered a conflict by itself.

Review timeline: the peer-review process is targeted to be completed within a maximum of six (6) weeks.

Editorial Decision and Revision

All items published in Al-Kasyaf undergo peer review and receive at least two reports. The handling editor communicates the decision to authors along with the reviewers’ comments and conditions. Possible decisions are:

  • Accept Submission – The manuscript meets the journal’s requirements and proceeds to copyediting.
  • Revisions Required (Minor) – Accepted in principle pending minor changes. Authors are typically given one (1) week to revise.
  • Resubmit for Review (Major) – Acceptance depends on substantial revision. Provide a point-by-point response to all comments (or a reasoned rebuttal). Usually one round; authors typically have up to three (3) weeks. The revised version may be re-reviewed.
  • Decline Submission – The manuscript has serious flaws and/or lacks original, significant contribution. No offer of resubmission is made.

If reviewers indicate that additional experiments or analyses are essential to support the conclusions, the paper may be rejected with encouragement to resubmit once the work is complete.

Authors must respond to every reviewer comment point-by-point. Where authors disagree, provide a clear, evidence-based reply.

Author Appeals

Authors may appeal a rejection by emailing the Managing Editor with a detailed justification and point-by-point responses to the reviewers’ and/or editor’s comments. The Managing Editor will forward the file (including referee identities) to the Editor-in-Chief or an Editorial Board member for an advisory recommendation. The consulted Editor may recommend acceptance, further review, or uphold the rejection. Decisions after appeal are final.

Production and Publication

Accepted manuscripts undergo professional copyediting, language editing (as needed), author proofreading, final corrections, pagination, and online publication on the Al-Kasyaf website. A print issue may be produced for each number where applicable, typically within one to two weeks after online publication.

Correcting the Record

The corresponding author may request a correction to the published paper (for essential changes) within one (1) week after online publication. Please consult the journal’s policy on corrections, expressions of concern, and retractions for details.
